Due to the size and complexity of the University's web presence this is an ongoing process.

Using this website

This website is run by Ulster University. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example,  this means you should be able to:

  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

Some areas of the website may not meet the AA accessibility standard, such as:

  • May experience some issues with pop-ups while zooming due to technical limitations.
  • May experience some issue found with high contrast mode in application forms  due to software product issues.
  • May experience data overflow issues while zooming more than 200%  due to the usage of iFrame. This is again a technical limitation.
  • Additional asterisk marks may be announced for screen reader users, but this is developed to align with business requirements.
  • Tab key must be used instead of arrow keys for navigation in some screens. This is due to the technical limitations of using links and buttons.

There may be other areas we have yet to pick up on as we continue to audit the site. The University is in the process of improving its core web templates to meet AA standards. It has set up an accessibility working group and will be running workshops with devolved editors to promote the importance of accessibility and to make sure standards are adhered to.

Technical Information

Ulster University is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
We plan to add text alternatives for all images by the end of December 2021. When we publish new content, we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

How we tested this website

This website is continually tested, and we have recently carried out tests on sample pages within our components library. We also crawl the site regularly to find issues such as where images without alt tags are located. Tests are carried out with users and via automated software.
We have tested the website using the following methods so far:

  • WebAIM colour contrast analyser
  • ARC toolkit
  • JAWS and NVDA screen readers for desktop
  • Axe - Web Accessibility Testing extension for Chrome

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We have a rolling programme of updating content in accordance with the guidelines set out by the WCAG.
